Report: UTEP possibly blocking Moultrie to transfer to Hogs

May 12, 2010 |  by Brandon Marcello

Arnett Moultrie is thought of as a one-and-done player, a future NBA star that could make an immediate impact on a team. Well, the UTEP forward wants to leave El Paso, Texas, and has a lot of interest from teams across the south. Included among his suitors is Arkansas.

Moultrie

Moultrie withdrew his name from the NBA Draft last week and announced he wasn’t returning to UTEP. Memphis, his hometown school, remains in play, but “developments over the past 48 hours suggest Mississippi State and Arkansas have made strong pushes and positioned themselves well,” writes Gary Parrish of CBSsports.com.

But, there’s more:

Still, there could be an issue.

Sources told CBSSports.com on Wednesday that — in addition to Memphis and other C-USA schools — UTEP might not release Moultrie to Mississippi State or Arkansas.

Moultrie, a sophomore who averaged 9.8 points and 6.7 rebounds last season, would have to sit out the 2010-11 season if he transfers, but the the forward could have an immediate impact in the frontcourt for any school in 2011-12. Parrish compares the immediate potential to that of Baylor’s Ekpe Udoh.

We all know Arkansas is on the recruiting trail hunting for help alongside forward Marshawn Powell in the frontcourt. While it may not be an immediate fix next season, adding Moultrie could prove huge in 2011.

  1. Okay, I can halfway understand not releasing a player to transfer to conference foes but keeping them from schools that are in no way connected to you is flat out wrong. These schools that want to pick and choose where a player can transfer need to concentrate on the players they still have, not the ones that have decided to transfer. I do realize that there are different circumstances to all transfers but most players should be able to go wherever they wish just like when they were being recruited in high school.
