As a result, apparently, the vuvuzela was saved by the cowbell.
The irritating, yet somehow endearing, sound of thousands of cowbells in the stands in Starkville, Miss., will continue despite decades of potshots and attempts to throw out the metal-on-metal ringing and dinging.
In the misinterpreted and immortal words of Christopher Walken, "I'm gonna need more cowbell (vuvuzela), baby!"
A vote of the Southeastern Conference’s athletic directors kept the tradition alive last month.
But with a new sound-making instrument hitting the scene, could things take a turn for the worst?

A vuvuzela is not a “traditional” noisemaker in the SEC like the cowbell at Mississippi State and therefore is not covered by the new policy allowing the use of traditional noisemakers. The vuvuzela, heard prominently during the World Cup this summer, has become a popular topic of conversation and frustration. The sound is relentless and, when played by thousands in a stadium, one may mistake the sound for a swarm of killer bees.
But how does this affect you?
This instrument, no matter how irritating to some, will not be banned from SEC games this upcoming season, according to the SEC. The instrument of choice in South Africa, which may or may not catch on here in the states, can be brought into stadiums across the league.
The vuvuzela, along with any artificial noisemaker, will fall under the revamped guidelines of the Mississippi State cowbell, according to SEC associate commissioner Charles Bloom. Fans are only allowed to use the cowbells (or vuvuzelas) during pregame, between quarters, halftime, timeouts, after scores and during possession changes.
But will the instrument catch on in the SEC? In tough economic times, perhaps. A vuvuzela retails for $6.99, while most high-end cowbells cost more than $25. (Yes, I did the research)
Let’s just hope ESPN and the national networks are on the ready if this phenomenon overseas catches on in college stadiums here in the states.
Some have figured it out. A Czech television network airing the World Cup installed an audio filter to reduce “the incessant drone of vuvuzelas,” on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Big Ten will not allow fans to carry a vuvuzela into stadiums.
Who knew such a cheap, plastic instrument would incite so much hatred, love and — as referenced in the video below — hilarity?

Arkansas sold these at a game in Fayetteville back in the 60′s sometime. I think it was against SMU. After that game they were subsequently banned. I was only 9 or 10 years old but bought one. My parents still have it at their home in Farmington.
This whole idea is just wrong.
The only school allowed to have a “traditional institutional noise maker” is Mississippi State.
