August 14, 2010 |  by Brandon Marcello

Arkansas went more than 180 plays Saturday in its first scrimmage of the preseason, which featured a good defensive showing from the first-teamers and some struggles from the first-team offense in the second half.

  1. Just curious, have the receivers corrected their tendency to tip balls? Thanks for the update.

  2. sounds very positive over-all
the defense appears to have real confidence this
    year way to go guys

  3. What happened to the High Octane Offense ?

  4. how is big tex looking at running back? four carries for 16 yards for a fullback who weighs 285 pounds is not bad

  5. Where is Jacoby Walker’s stats? Did he play?

  6. Win,

Jacoby Walker hurt his knee in the spring and had knee surgery in the offseason. He will be a redshirt this year.

  7. Why does Broderick continue to get the majority of the snaps at running back? The guy doesn’t produce! He had more than twice as many carries as any other back and still doesn’t have the most yards. CBP’s love of Broderick is baffling to me when you have three other backs that in my opinion are more productive! YARGHHH!

  8. Ethan,

This is just an observation of what could be happening with B. Green.
It could be he’s only being used in short yardage and goal line situations.

If you noticed, Knile Davis had only 1 carry for 6 yards. I’m assuming the reasoning for this was because he probably started in the FB position, like he’s been doing as of late in practice, but still, Big Tex had 4 carries and 16 yards as his backup.

If you look at the stats, DeAnthony Curtis and 2 newcomers, Humphrey and Herndon, all had better numbers than Joe Adams.
A lot of the situations these players are put in are scripted by the coaching staff, so I wouldn’t get too worked up about it until you see a live game.

This is what concerns me the most. I realize R. Mallett took the majority of the snaps for the 1st team, but he’s still completing just slightly over 50% of his passes. That number needs to increase a little between now and Sept.

  9. Knile got the first snap of the scrimmage with the first team offense at tailback. He tweaked his hamstring and didn’t return. I’m going back to last year with B. Green! The guy received the majority of the snaps last year. People will point out he had 10 touchdowns. ANY of our backs would have had that many touchdowns if they got all of the goalline snaps. Broderick should be fourth on the depth chart at tail back and maybe move him to FB vs Knile Davis. I just don’t understand the unwarrented love fest with B. Green

  10. Ethan,

I understand the confusion you see with B. green, but also understand the situation we had with the TB position last season.
Ronnie and Knile were both True Freshmen, but it was also Broderick’s first season in the CBP system. Even Dennis Johnson was brand new to quality playing time because of Micheal Smith that first year.
All 4 of these guys are just now starting to establish themselves in the backfield. They will all more than likely look much different than they did last season, if they all stay healthy.
Our O-line will be much improved as well, which wasn’t all that good last season, so relax, everything will be fine.

  11. There were more passes thrown in this one practice session than all of HDN’s entire tenure at Arkansas. Never thought I’d see the day the Hogs were known as an air attack team. I love it.

  12. Knile Davis started at TB and had the first carry. His hamstring tightened up so he was pulled….thats why he only had one carry. The 2nd team WRs have better numbers than the 1s because they were going against the 2nd team defense. You really can’t look to far into the numbers and stats here guys….for every yard gained was a yard OUR defense gave up.

to the Ryan Mallett’s low completion percentage comment: Last year his completion percentage was only low against top defenses. If our secondary is as good as it should be then Mallett’s completion percentage should be low. Phil Steele has our secondary ranked 18th nationally.

I’m glad to hear that Alfred Davis is doing well and has gotten himself in shape. I did not like how he played in the spring game. Also…has anyone noticed the Joneses? DD Jones, Patrick Jones, and Byran Jones….all DTs. Pretty crazy and I wouldn’t mind seeing them all lined up together in a 5-2.
