Arkansas spent Tuesday practicing in a steady Ozark Mountain rain, and if the forecast is any indication, the Hogs could end up doing the same for the rest of the week.
Speaking on the Southeastern Conference coaches’ teleconference Wednesday, Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino said he liked the way his team practiced in the wet weather, especially with a slight chance of showers Saturday night in Little Rock.
“Our focus was good,” Petrino said. “We did a good job throwing and catching the ball in the rain, and it didn’t seem to bother us. We certainly understand we could be playing in the rain on Saturday, so if it allows and there’s no lightning in the area, we’ll try to go outside as much as possible this week.”
Several times in the past Arkansas has opted to go inside the Walker Pavilion during rainy weather and soaking footballs in buckets of water. But nothing beats the real deal, offensive coordinator Garrick McGee said.
“It was enough rain to be a distraction and get the balls wet, and throw the ball and move around on the surface when it’s wet,” McGee said. “I think it was a really good decision to come outside and practice.”
The rain is supposed to move out of Northwest Arkansas for the most part late Thursday with a slight chance remaining Friday and Saturday. Arkansas kicks off with Louisiana-Monroe Saturday at 6 p.m., in War Memorial Stadium. The game will be televised by Fox Sports Net.
