FAYETTEVILLE - Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino agreed to a seven-year contract extension Saturday through 2017.
As part of the agreement, Petrino will receive an annual salary of $3.56 million, up from $2.85 million under his original contract. That amount will make him the seventh-highest paid coach in the country and third-highest paid coach in the Southeastern Conference, according to figures earlier this week in USA Today.
Under the new agreement, Petrino’s non-compete clause was extended from SEC West schools only to all SEC schools. The contract’s mutual buyout clause is $18 million for the next two years should Petrino be terminated or decide to leave the school.
The buyout falls slightly to $17.9 million for the 2013 season and gradually declines each season to $3.9 million by the final year of the agreement.
“I am excited to express my commitment to the University of Arkansas,” Petrino said in a release announcing the agreement. “Chancellor (Dave) Gearhart and Jeff Long have been tremendous in terms of their support and I appreciate the positive energy the fans have demonstrated. I look forward to continuing to dedicate myself to leading the Razorback football program.”
The agreement comes just days after Petrino had initially been rumored in media reports to be a candidate for the head coaching vacancy at Florida. That position was filled Saturday by Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp.
In addition to a pay raise, Petrino has more incentives in his new contract. Among those are $300,000 if Arkansas wins a national championship and $150,000 if the Razorbacks play in the national title game.
Petrino will also receive $125,000 for a non-title BCS game, up from $75,000 under his original contract. Arkansas will face Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 4.
“This agreement demonstrates a mutual long-term commitment between Coach Petrino and the University of Arkansas,” UA athletics director Jeff Long said in the release. “Coach Petrino has done a tremendous job in leading the Razorback program to new levels of success both on and off the field. I appreciate his strong desire to remain at the University of Arkansas to continue to build our program and positively impact the lives of our student-athletes.
“I am excited about the direction of the Razorback Football program and look forward to Coach Petrino serving as the head football coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks for many years to come.”
Petrino is 23-14 in three years with the Razorbacks and 64-23 overall in seven seasons as a college head coach.

Great news! So happy that Coach Petrino does indeed seem committed and happy at Arkansas!
I also like the non compete clause… I wonder what the buyout in this one will be…?
Also, Thanks for the update Matt..
very good news….now lets win that bowl game
Thanks for info Matt.
Kinda confirms all the Hog fans opinion of BP and discredits the Atlanta media and that associated group of pundits who unfairly maligned him.
yep, Atlanta writers convinced me to quit going to home depot…lol…i am surprised arthur blank still has business in arkansas..good deal for hogs..win win situation….watch the committments after this weekend pop up..
Only once have we been closer to winning or being a contender for a national championship, and that was 45 years ago. Coach Petrino is the right coach to help us achieve that same level of success. Thanks for staying with us, Coach!
Praise Allah! God is great! Go Hogs!
Jeff Long delivered, now I guess I need to answer the call myself.
And that puts to bed all the talk because no one’s paying 18 million to buy his contract out. He’s incredible, but no one is that incredible. Great move by Coach Petrino and the administration. Everyone’s gonna prosper from this relationship baby! Go Hogs!
Now that is done I want another SEC game in Little Rock!
This is one of the greatest days in the history of the Razorback football program. No one is paying 18, 14, or 10 million buyout, but more importantly, Bob Petrino wanted these terms so he can make the unequivocal statement that he wants to finish his career here.
The ball is now in our court. We have to make sure that every DWR home game is a sellout, we have to make sure the football center happens sooner, rather than later, and for crying out loud, boycott Home Depot and everyone who advertises on ESPN forever!
I know its breaking news but Muschamp is UF new coach. I’m jumping up and down by their selection. TU – aka, Texas is heart broken and demoralized and I love it. While Muschamp is a “good” coach, he is not a great head coach. TU’s defense stunk this year and it had some of it’s best talent since 2005. Last year’s #3 in rush defense was #3 because it played in the Big 12 but when it faced an SEC team it sucked. I respect Muschamp as a good coach – he was good at lsu & auburn – but I still have my doubts as to his ability to be a head coach and manage a whole team. Time will tell but I can’t help but rejoice over what has transpired the last 12 hours – Petrino locks in his future at Arkansas, TU gets b**ch slapped and UF gets a good – but no Urban Meyer’s – coach. The future looks bright for the Hogs!!
My New Year’s Resolutions:
1) Answer the call of Jeff Long to show support for his wise decision to keep CBP as Boss Hog for the long haul. This decision helps prove his long term vision for the program.
2) Boycott Home Depot. (I will shop at Lowe’s)
3) Boycott all advertisers on ESPN
4) Annoy my neighbors with consistent calling of the Hogs all nite long during the Sugar Bowl
5) Since I live in Dallas, annoy every short-horn fan I see by asking them if they’re going to root for A&M since their season is over. (It’s not very nice but it seems like a moral imperative.)
Boycotts are okay but if you really want to get at ESPN sponsors, start posting on every site you visit how bad they and that encourages others to spread the word and boycott them as well.
great news,Go Bobby Go.
I turned 40 last week. Never, has there ever, been a better time to be a Razorback. BP is shored up, FL hired a coordinator (can you say Ron Zook), We’ve got top 5 Basketball, and Baseball recruiting classes coming in, and we’re going to the Sugar Bowl. Good gosh……can I please just sit and soak this in a bit before anyone wakes me up!!!
azhog, I feel the same way you do! What a wonderful Christmas present we received today! Thanks, Long and Petrino!
I have a gift for you remember. Can’t wait to see your F-150 beamer with the stars and bars complete with gun rack!!!!
How Sweet it is to be a HOG or a HOG fan. Great job Jeff Long and what a great time to go public with this news.
Now ….. RYAN …. RYAN …. RYAN MALLETT … get back on that hill and lets finish this next year.
1) you have the chance of a life time to do something here that will cement you in the eyes of every Arkansas fan as one of the great ambassadors ever of the state.
2) you will not have to worry about the work stoppage or the collective bargaining agreement in the N.F.L. it will be resolved by the end of next season as it stands now you could be sitting next year waiting for it to be resolved.
3) you will move up from a 6,7,or 8 pick to a can’t miss 1,2,or3.
4) you may avoid being drafted by Buffalo while winning a national championship.
5) this is why you became a Razorback, this is your dream, this is why, THIS IS WHY!
Hey Pat Forde,…stick this in your peacepipe and smoke on it for a while! Better yet, just stick it where the sun don’t shine, permanently!
GO HOGS GO, BABY!!!!!
Hey Buckeyenut, make sure you come back to this site for some real conversation after a real good SEC team puts Ohio St. in their place once again. Promise?

I Didn’t see any of those big time athletes on this all american list From R-Kansas.There are however Two Buckeye’s.There are 6 Big 10 all-amereicans and 7 from the SESLEAZE who bought the heisman last night.SESLEAZE the new southwest conference.
See that guy listed under Chewbaka, or what ever the hell his name is, Nuttball? He’s the #1 defensive player in America.
Maybe you should ask him if Arkansas’s offense is for real, instead of resting on laurels that suggest those two guys you just mentioned are really legit.
Neither one of those guys would make 1st team SEC and that’s a fact.
GonzoHog,
Will do. Could be a few years before that happens though. It’s good you feel good about things there in the SESLEAZE you got all your good players all under contract and now your coach.
GonzoHog,
Quote( Neither one of those guys would make 1st team SEC and that’s a fact.) Correct they no better than to take the kind of money that would be offered in the SESLEAZE.
You say that like Ohio ST. has never cheated before. I’ve never seen a top-flight program without cheating being involved, so I’ll just accept the fact Ohio St. isn’t one.
GonzoHog,
Scroople’s the SESLEAZE has but 0. SESLEAZE =The old Southwest conference pay for play professional athlete’s.
I don’t recall Arkansas being on that cheating list. Maybe you could shed some light for us? Have a link?
The SEC doesn’t have any “scrooples,” because no such word exists. Buckeyenut, you are a moron, plain and simple.
azhog,
Be prepared to be slammed rather rudely on J4. That should wake you up out of the little stupor you are in.
People please, lets all just ignore this illiterate idiot and sometime late on Jan. 4th he will disappear to go cry til next year. But for now lets keep our talk amongst each other and leave buckeyenut behind like the Hogs will do Ohio St. in Jan.
please inform the buckeyenut that rice and ARKANSAS were the only two teams in the SWC that were not put on probation.
i wonder if the doe-eyes are ready for SEC speed.
if you want to talk about states, how is it you elected obama two years ago. now lets talk IQ.
Pretty sure TheBuckeyeNut know what it’s like to take it up the butt. On J4 the rest of Ohio will be joining him.
geezerhog,
Just because you were not put on probation doesn’t mean that you did nothing wrong they just couldn’t prove anything. Very strange though how you went from one pay for play conference to another you know the SESLEAZE. Just purchased a heisman did you guys buy your TE’s award for him to? Just make sure you honor all your players’ contracts.
As for SESLEAZE speed I didn’t see any of those overpaid world class speedsters from R-Kansas on the All-American list above. Don’t worry there is still plenty of time to get some under contract.
Buckeyenut, get up off your knees, set on your ass and keep your mouth shut and maybe just maybe if not to late you may not develope aids. Now I ignore you forever!
rmmr,
Can’t even follow your own advice!!! Dumbass
Ohio State is a fine program with a nice history. But change is in the wind. Arkansas is on the way up and Ohio State is on the way out. January 4 see the wheels in motion.
BuckeyeNut, you wouldn’t be the sort of insecure, no life fellow who wastes all his life on silly message boards and always has to have the last word….would you?
Son, please get off the internet and get your chores done.
Poppy,
Well given all the recent recruiting rankings from previous years and also this one OSU 6TH SOOWEE 20th or higher one would guess here that you Sir are in error. And yes January 4 see the wheels in motion. You are one hit wonders at best.
JoeT,
Just got to keep it real for (how do you say in R-Kansas )Ya’ll.
Player rankings are a fair indication of talent but in today’s game, everybody has talent friend. Coaching is everything. Tressel is good, Petrino is, at least offensively, elite.
Buckeyenut’s Mom,
Staff is hard at work mom don’t sweat it.
Poppy,
You can’t compete without the Talent no matter how good the coach is. And I certainly would not put Petrino in that category. Mallet and Brohm were above average qb’s and he landed Brohm because his family were all Louisville alum. And he scored big when he got mallet under contract. We’ll see how he does when they are gone.
Would we be in a BCS game without talent? As you point out, our recruiting classes are rarely ranked in the top 20. Somebody must’ve coached ‘em up or else your recruiting rankings aren’t as reliable or unbiased as you’d like to believe.
You might be surprised by our talent on J4.
One more thing. As I said, everybody has talent these days. Coaching makes a huge difference. And second behind coaching is quarterback play. Petrino happens to be the best quarterback coach anywhere, second to none friend. Tressel is a good coach who relies too much on “big name” recruits to get the job done for him. If was as good a coach as Petrino Ohio State would be unstoppable. As it is, Ohio State’s moderate talent advantage will likely be negated by superior coaching and quarterback play.
This is my last read of this blog. Bucknutts has the floor.
Poppy,
Once again when you hear the pundits speak of Elite Coaches I can’t think of one time Petrinos name has been mentioned. But Jim Tressel’s name is.Petrino is a coach that has had 2 qb’s land in his lap and has done ok at best. That does not make him a good QB coach. We shall see what he can do when Mallet is gone.
Your words betray your ignorance of what you speak. Anybody who follows Petrino, his recruiting and coaching regularly would recognize this. Good luck on J4 and goodbye.
He won’t be suprised. You can’t show an idiot the light of day. I’m sure he’ll think of another excuse between now and when his Buckeyes take a beating on Jan. 4th.
He thinks he’s being smarter than Arkansas fans by talking trash about it’s residents being associated with F-150s, trailer parks, low average income and health care, but in the end, he just makes himself look like an ass with a mouth.
He’s probably not old enough to know the difference though. My 14 year old son wasn’t capable of making comments that ignorant when he was 10.
Poppy,
bye bye
Praise Allah, God is great! Go Hogs on January 4 in the Sugar Bowl!
GonzoHog,
Quote (You can’t show an idiot the light of day.) Well you should know. And speaking of (looking like an ass with a mouth.) Sorry I don’t quite measure up to the rest of the board here.Just trying to shed some light on the truth here at the slophouse.
Matt,
Please take buckeyenut off the site. He can talk about trailer trash and all that. But, what he said Razorabdullah he needs to be removed.
Son you have been on this website making comments for 4 straight hours. I really wish you would get out and talk to a girl without having to give her your credit card #.
I can’t believe you guys are still reading the BuckNut, who doesn’t have the intelligence of a chimp and undoubtedly writes with crayons and oversized pencils with large erasers when he isn’t trying to conger up a complete sentence on this site.
His scribed brilliance clearly gives “dumbing down” a whole new meaning. Don’t waste your time trying to understand this bigoted, low brow, piece of trash. Thankfully, this idiot does not call Arkansas home, which speaks volumes, given the degree of his ignorance. I stopped reading BuckNut’s unintelligible jibber jabber a week ago. It just doesn’t get any more stupid.
Be thankful you have a RB from Arkansas leading the Browns to a few victories. He’s the best you’ve seen since Greg Pruitt back in the late 70s.
Really too bad it took some good ‘ol fashion Arkansas trailer trash to bail them out, but what else would you expect from a peice of s**t city like Cleveland?
Its really simple folks, lets start a boycott of Buckeyenut. This forum is for Arkansas Fans. It is not a place for fans of other teams unless they can present points of view in RESPECT of Razorback athletics. We simply need to ignore him and the parasite will eventually give up trying.
Totally agree, UA87. BuckNut is a redneck neanderthal who [thankfully] gives the people of Ohio someone to proudly call their own. I stopped reading this fool’s moronic ramblings, altogether.
How did the 59th best schedule treat you guys Buckeyenutt, because you still couldn’t even make it to the national championship. There’s more trailers in Southern Ohio than most of the South combined. Your hippocracy and pure lack of intellegence know no bounds. But I do look forward to your humiliation! Take care…
ua87 & dwp007, I totally agree with you about BuckNutCase. I just couldn’t help myself in replying to his low comments about me. He is so disrespectful in his “humor”. I hope he has crawled back underneath his rock. If not, I hope he gets knocked out by a rock!
Say Buckey, Y don’t U lay off GirlHog? Everything else is fair game. C’mon man, U don’t need to diss on ladies; or religion for that matter. Keep it fun and hilarious, not hurtful. We got a few weeks yet before the big game. I mean after all, what kind of Nut are U? Man or Mouse Nut?
Thanks, Texas Hog. Luv u, Man!
I’m not sure why I talked myself into reading it, yet that piece of jibber jabber, BuckNut, was very well stated. Bravo.
God Ryan Mallett if you leave right now i will totally start crying because i have always loved you attitude that you brought to the Arkansas Razorbacks Football team. love you attitude its electric.
