Receivers roll in 52-3 rout of Lobos

LITTLE ROCK - Arkansas’ receivers were touted as the best group in the nation by many coming into the season.

Through two games, it’s hard to refute the statement.

Be it Joe Adams out of the backfield, Cobi Hamilton through the air or Marquel Wade on special teams, the Razorbacks’ wideouts were explosive again Saturday, making big play after big play in a 52-3 win over New Mexico at War Memorial Stadium.

Arkansas’ wide receivers accounted for 475 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns a game Arkansas’ offense amassed 632 yards of offense and a school-record 34 first downs.

“In my eyes we have four of the best receivers in the country,” Adams said. “If you get the ball to me, Jarius (Wright), Greg (Childs) or Cobi, we can all do the same things and score. The guys that are backing us up are just as good and it’s kind of hard when you’re trying to stop eight guys.”

Hamilton continued his streak of memorable performances in central Arkansas. The junior finished with five catches for 132 yards and a 54-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

In five career games at War Memorial Stadium, Hamilton has 18 catches for 508 yards and six touchdowns. Five of those scores have been of 54 yards or longer.

“I give him a hard time because he’s playing in my city,” said Adams, a Little Rock native. “He has great games in Little Rock so maybe he should move here.”

Adams, who returned a pair of punts for touchdowns in a win over Missouri State last weekend, was used in a variety of ways Saturday.

Lined up at tailback, Adams had runs of 15 and 18 yards in the first quarter. At receiver, the Little Rock native had catches of five catches for 78 yards, and had a 75-yard touchdown called back in the first quarter because of a hold.

Through the first two games of the season, Adams has amassed 295 all-purpose yards. He likely would have added more to that number Saturday had New Mexico not intentionally punted the ball away from the senior.

“We wanted to get him touches,” Petrino said. “We know how special he is running with it. We’re going to use him in as many ways as we can to get him touches.

“He’s very explosive and very hard to tackle. I think his confidence is really high right now.”

The unique skill set and depth of Arkansas’ receivers has allowed coaches to use many of them and in a variety of ways. Six different receivers caught at least one pass in the win Saturday.

Wade, a freshman, also added an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the first quarter.

“This staff has been responsible recruiting these guys so I expect a lot from them,” Arkansas offensive coordinator Garrick McGee said.”I don’t get impressed very easily; I expect them to go out and make big plays and keep our crowd going.

“They’ve got to go into a big-time game and do it in the fourth quarter.”

  1. Cobi loves the Rock!! …. any word on Jake B? WPS!

  2. Get ready for a wild confrence season. I dont think anyone makes it to the SEC Championship undefeated. We have a long ways to go in several areas on this team to be in the running to make it there. The SEC will be a gauntlet this year for sure. Lets go hogs! BELIEVE IT CAN HAPPEN!

  3. Nice read Matt. Can anyone else see BP bringing in Brandon M. to help establish a running game (after we have a lead) in the 4th quarter to hang on to the ball and run the clock out. I hope we see Childs get some catches next week and dust DJ off a bit, if that hammy is better, and get some playing time.
Big ups, to the “D” line also !! WPS !!

  4. The Hog receivers are the best in the country and some of if not the Fastest in the Country, this team can be very special, but the Offensive Line Coach and Defensive Line Coach, need to look at Alabama game film, and come up with a Foolproof plan, that,s where that game will be won.

  5. Coach Mcgee is the man! He is going to be a great head ball coach.

  6. It is silly to say that our receivers are the best in the country unless you have personally watched every receiver corp in the country. Otherwise you don’t know. Ours are certainly very good but so are Oklahoma State’s, Florida’s and Oklahoma’s, to name a few.

Adding Joe Adams to the mix in the backfield for a few plays was a great move. Coach Petrino is nothing if not creative.

  7. Jackson,i didn,t say nobody else had good receivers,i said i thought the Hogs had the best,THAT,S MY STORY AND IM STICKIN TO IT.

  8. Righty O. Go Hogs!

  9. We will have to step up on our D starting next week with Troy. They will and always do have an explosive offense theirselves. Then Alabama will be a whole big stepup. I think our D can create havoc on their offense as well as theirs can on ours unless this offensive line steps up big. Already in this confrence, what you think a matchup will go like, goes nothing like what you would think. Like Auburn vs Miss St., South Carolina in a sqeaker high scoring game with Georgia, Vanderbilt beating a good Uconn team and Florida and Tenn. with explosive offenses this early in the year. Yep get ready Hogs its going to be a hellva confrence season, so expect the unexpected. GO HOGS!

  10. Hi there, I recently came across your blog site whilst hunting for recommendations with regard to plants for a friends wedding ceremony. You’ve some quite nice pictures here. Exactly what are their names it is always good to know? I’d love to make use of several of them in my floral arrangements. Cheers. Ava Bryan
