Razorbacks No. 10 in BCS

October 23, 2011 |  by Matt Jones

FAYETTEVILLE - The humans liked Arkansas’ win over Ole Miss, but the computers weren’t quite so impressed.

The Razorbacks dropped one position in the Bowl Championship Series rankings Sunday despite moving up in the two polls associated with the standings. Arkansas came back to beat unranked Ole Miss 29-24 Saturday on the road, handing the Rebels their 10th consecutive conference loss.

Arkansas was ranked No. 8 the Associated Press Top 25 and USA Today Top 25 Coaches’ Poll, and No. 9 in the Harris Interactive Poll, all released Sunday. The latter of the two rankings make up two-thirds of the BCS, with six computer rankings comprising the other one-third.

The Razorbacks (6-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) were ranked No. 9 in the initial BCS rankings released last week. Oregon and Kansas State both leaped Arkansas in this week’s standings, while Oklahoma finished one spot ahead of the Razorbacks following its first loss of the year.

LSU and Alabama are ranked Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, in this week’s BCS standings. The two teams have next week off ahead of their much anticipated game Nov. 5.

Oklahoma State, Boise State and Clemson rounded out the top five.

  1. I don’t think we would have beaten Texas Tech either, so I’m not too worried about us moving down in the polls. I will say this, though. For all the flaws that we see, and we’ve seen them in every phase of our team, we’ve also seen every phase of the team step up and help win games. I love kool-aid, and I love the way that Coach Petrino’s teams play. They get better as the season goes on. We have not peaked, we haven’t even put together a complete game yet, but I think those players have the ability to put together complete, masterful performances. Our future isn’t bright because we have a manageable schedule. It’s bright because the team’s performance can and will improve. I just hope they keep working to peak higher and more often as the games get closer to the end.

  2. Where did kansas st come from? Strong showing for the Big awh 9?

  3. Kansas State has beaten everybody on their schedule, and the computers like the Big XII. No worries though, as they play OU next week and OU has murder on their minds after losing to Tech. We need to SMASH Vandy this week, which may prove difficult now that Aaron Rodgers seems to have their offense in gear. The Vanderbilt team we face next week will probably be the best version of that team to take the field all season long. Their defense is tough, and they put up over 300 rushing yards this week. This ain’t yo’ Daddy’s Vandy. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if we beat South Carolina by a wider margin that we do the Commodores.

  4. I am very frustrated with the Razorbacks. We have to start playing ball from the first whistle. It seems we are full of ourselves when we have NOTHING to be cocky about. I will also say that while Robinson makes good adjustments, he appears to be clueless when it comes to predicting what the opponent will bring to the battle. Furthermore, why is it necessary to play an entire half before making an adjustment? One adjustment that still has not been made by our DBs is tackling. These guys are absolute whimps when it comes to tackling. We are fortunate that our offense is such a scoring machine. Still yet, ranking Kansas State ahead of the Razorbacks is total K-WRAPP!! Kansas State will lose 2 of the next three, and then we can move on as long as we show up to play. There is no reason why we shouldn’t come to play LSU with one loss, and in control of our own destiny, but to do that we have to show up with our “A” game every time. The Hogs should keep in mind, that no SEC team is going to hand out a win to its opponent, but if we will stay on the gas we are the better team in every remaining match-up with the exception of LSU. Even then, we have the better offense, so if our offense shows up in Baton Rouge hitting on all cylinders, and the “D” has a season best performance we can go home with the boot. We have definitely been there before.

  5. im more upset with oregan and oklahoma being ahead of us, our one loss is to Alabama, and i realize Oregan’s is to LSU, but they havn’t played the quality teams since then that we have, and oklahoma just lost to a non ranked oponent, again our loss was to alabama. And who exactly has oklahoma beat so far?

  6. If the humans would like the teams for the right reasons, instead of voting for teams in their reigon, the polls would be something you can believe in. When you have someone that votes Bosie #1 every week its hard to believe some that vote have a clue. All you can do is win and hope someday for a playoff.

  7. I guess this is why I was so upset with Saturdays game. I knew going in there was 3 teams ahead of us could fall and thought what a good time to play a weak team and make a jump. After the game I also knew we fall out of top 10 if these teams don’t lose. We are in the BCS know, so its not about only winning, but how you win against weaker teams and with their weak schedules. But the good news is 2 did lose and believe me Oaky will lose again as I said last week, 2 to 3 losses for them. Also K-State will get a loss, as well as a couple more teams I expect. Now we need A&M to put a beat down on Oaky and it will help our cause greatly, as well as say an Ole Miss strong finish in their season. Lets go HOGS things seem to be happening the way we need them to, so lets roll at Vandy! WPS!

  8. Londonhawg, I agree, I could see for this year putting Boise at 10 move everybody up 1 and I’m fine with that. Boise has proved to take some big boys down in past years, hence the #10, but this year there are too many good teams that battle week in and week out, Boise don’t so to drop us for a close game at Ole Miss, with all our proven battles is kinda BS!

  9. Great win by the Hogs!

  10. i dont get it,the hogs were ranked # 9 and two of the top 10 teams lose, and arkansas ends up at 10th??..are we not allowed to move up like all the other top 10 teams?if ok got beat ‘at home’ by # 20 tx tech, they should be knocked out of the top 10,just like wics..instead they get our spot while we won in dramatic fashion w dj,tw and ja ,and ok. lost to tx tech.maybe they should change the letters to BSc instead of bcs!

  11. Great win by the Hogs! I know everyone was just as disappointed as I was with the poor first half performance, but I was a little afraid that Nutt’s boys would play hard for him against his old team, and they did. However, this is not the Nutt teams of the past. We adjusted and won! Bottom line.

I know this may not be the best place to do so, however, I thought I would at least throw this out. My son’s baseball team is selling raffle tickets for the LSU vs. AR game. They have 2 drawings, first is 4 lower level tickets plus 2 nights at the Embassy Suites on Constitution (Thurs & Friday), second is 2 lower level tickets. The raffle tickets are $10 each and good odds. The donations are tax deductible and the drawing in on Nov. 12th. If anyone is interested just email me at bill.lambert@pioneer.com for more details.

  12. quit worrying about the polls and what everybody else is doing. had we played a good team this weekend and played like we did, we would have lost.
if we play the way we did saturday we will lose at LEAST one game before LSU.
you cannot turn it off and on every week and hope to keep winning. our defense isn’t close to playing at an SEC level even though we have the talent.
i’m afraid this team thanks they will go out every week and just out score their opponent.
won’t work. i think we go to baton rouge with 2 losses, although we are better than any team we play before thanksgiving.

  13. Polls at this point in the season don’t mean much. They’re good for talk radio, message boards and blogs, but only the polls at the end of the season really matter. And if we take care of business between now and Thanksgiving, we’ll probably be in the top 5 or 6 when we play LSU. That would be great and would insure a BCS bowl if we win that game.

We Arkansas fans have always had a chip on our collective shoulders, feeling we don’t get the respect nationally that we should. Problem is, just about every other team’s fan base feels the same way; it’s human nature. I have no problem with Oklahoma, Oregon, Boise State, etc. being in front of us right now. When the regular season is over, we’ll see how many of them are still ahead of us.
