Report: SEC will move to 9 games

November 7, 2011 |  by Matt Jones

FAYETTEVILLE - A report quoting the University of South Carolina president states the Southeastern Conference will move to a nine-game conference football schedule once the league has 14 teams, though the SEC refuted the report Monday.

USC president Harris Pastides told DailyGamecock.com SEC teams will only play three nonconference games after the league moves to 14 teams. Texas A&M was added as the conference’s 13th member in September and Missouri was announced as the 14th on Sunday. The two schools will begin SEC competition in 2012.

The league will continue to operate under a two-division format, with Texas A&M added to the SEC West and Missouri to the SEC East, league commissioner Mike Slive said Sunday.

The nine-game format would likely work the same way as the current eight-game schedule in which each team plays all of its division foes, and one permanent and two rotating opponents from the other division. Arkansas will continue to play South Carolina each year from the eastern division, according to the report.

The Razorbacks and Gamecocks came into the league together in 1992 and have played each year since. Arkansas leads the series 13-7 over that time, including a 44-28 win Saturday night.

The Razorbacks have not released their 2012 football schedule yet, though Tulsa has announced a nonconference game next November at Arkansas.

  1. The way we compete against LSU: five wide all game long with the occasional draw play to Dennis Johnson mixed in.

Absolutely no runs with Green or with Wingo trying to go around the outside. That absolutely will not work against LSU’s speed.

  2. Agreed. Greg Childs needs to wake up!!!

  3. Rick, agreed! plus I believe we will have to go medium to long in passing game. Offensive line play will have to improve, but I believe we can attack their great secondary with our recievers speed and then a little bit of run game.

  4. I wonder if that will work against Tennessee this weekend, since they are our next opponent.

  5. skezell, you hit on it. We can’t overlook tinny or msu. The swamp rats are three games away. If we get slack on any of the next three, we can kiss our chance for a BCS game goodbye.

  6. Chris Childs isn’t asleep. He’s injured and working his ass off to contribute to this team. Maybe YOU should wake up!

  7. I’ve been impressed by G. Childs being able to go from a sure NFL pick to a guy that may or may not get a chance to go pro but still does all of the little things that goes unnoticed and appreciated(blocking, etc). The best part is he does it with a smile on his face. Consummate team player..Childs.

  8. I agree! Greg Childs is obviously not the same since the knee injury. He may or may not ever fully recover, that”s left to be seen. He does give it 100 percent and blocks good and does it with a smile on his face! If he continues to play he will do something big between now and the end of the football season to
win a big game! Keep going Greg!

  9. Greg is going to have a good game against Tennessee. Him missing the troy game and then the Vandy game kind of has keep him from getting into the groove of things. He’ll step it up for these last three games

  10. but i also agree. I’ll never understand why Green gets the carries he does. He wouldn’t even get carries for UCA with his speed. I think he should be utilized in a different way.

  11. While I agree that overall DJ is a better back, I don’t understand all the hate thrown at wingo. The past few games he has made some impressive grinding runs, including the TD on Saturday. Do I think he should start? No. I just think that some of the folks on here bitching about him and others like GC should walk a mile in their shoes before throwing all the hate.

    WPS BEAT TENNESSEE!

  12. rick, you’re right, its not going to be easy running on lsu,but if we can go all pass and TW has enough time to throw the ball, with this passing game we have, its very possible we could rip their secondary apart, and hit them with DJ while they’re still thinking pass,LSU definately has a tough D, it will be hard to run against them, especially around the end.but hopefully the hogs defense will step up and tyler wilson and the passing game will have a great day! ..GHG WPS!..beat tenn.!!

  13. Okay, there are some talented running backs that are committed to Ole Miss, never let an open pass slip through your hands, someone with a brain needs to get on over there, and get them in for a visit. And I have no idea why Dorial Green Beckham wouldn’t choose Arkansas. #1. Bobby Petrino knows how to get a receiver ready for the NFL. When DGB is about ready for the NFL, Arkansas may have the best football facilities in the country, and they’re pretty good already. This really aint that hard of a decision, clearly Arkansas is the best situation for him, all around. Especially considering Arkansas graduates almost all of their receivers at the end of the yr.

Okay Tennessee does a pretty good job of protecting the QB, 2nd in the SEC, and they do a pretty good job on 3rd downs, and their pass defense is much better than their run defense. Arkansas needs another complete physical game, to win it, ..

  14. Wingo and Green should remain in the backfield for pass protection. The line hasn’t improved well enough so Wilson will need enough time for sighting his targets. Line must hold their blocks better running / passing.

The Vols and Bulldogs will look to upset the Hogs. So no looking ahead. Respect your opponents.

  15. nutts gone.

  16. FYI…Nutt won’t be back @ Ole Miss!
    http://msn.foxsports.com/collegefootball/story/Mississippi-coach-Houston-Nutt-wont-return-next-season-110711

Make sure you read and re-read the parts of the article talking about how well he did with Ed O’s recruits, then talent dropped off ‘noticeably’ and then later Nutt goes on to say how ‘the program has made SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS and is in better shape than when he arrived’ Not sure how he figures that, but it is classic Nutt! I’m still laughing my arse off, rolling on the floor and crying hysterically!

  17. If Missouri is in the sec east , we should definately try to have them as our permanent east team instead of S.Car. This would be a whole lot better as far as traveling to a game. I enjoy the sc game but the travel distance really makes it hard to go to these game. Matt , what’s your thoughts on this and the possiblity of it? Go Hogs, beat the Vols!!!

  18. How about 13 conferences games. Let everybody play everybody and then there is no doubt about who is the best team. If you are a BCS school then you should only play BCS schools. Why does LSU need to play Western Kentucky? If your truly the #1 team in the country how can you even consider playing a non-Bcs school.

  19. LSU plays Western Kentucky for the same reason we play Mo. State. None of the coaches want to play any more hard games than they have to. Except maybe Les Miles this year. It’s easier to win some gimmees. It’s all about protecting their jobs and huge salaries.

  20. Guys, the feeling over here (not me, just the people I have to be around) is that Tennessee has a good chance to upset the Hogs this weekend. They beat MTSU and suddenly think they are ready to compete for the SEC championship. I say this only to let everybody know that they will come into the game this weekend with confidence, so it is important that we jump on them early.

    1. DJ as the featured RB, with Wingo and Green playing the occasional series or play to give DJ rest.

    2. Short and medium range passes early, then hit them with deep balls.

    3. DL rush the passer like crazy; they can’t run and they have a freshman QB.

I can see this one playing out very similar to the Carolina game. Hogs 42, Vols 24

  21. I agree that DJ has to be the featured running back. Broderick Green is simply to slow in hitting the hole and Ronnie Wingo doesn’t have the ability to break tackles. If we are going to move the ball on the ground against good teams, DJ is our only real option at RB. I also completely agree that we need to concentrate on beating Tennessee this week and nothing else. Anybody that saw us play Ole Miss or Vanderbilt knows that we can be beaten if we don’t play a complete game.

  22. Just a note. Joe Adams will be the best NFL receiver of the group we have. Wright is Wilsons favoite target this year but he has missed on so many passes this year and Adams has been the one who has paid. I love Wilson but after being beat to death this year, he is throwing way behind his receivers and Adams being the fastest, well he has not had a chance after beating his man. I started watching this in the last 3 games as it was mentioned to me. As the OC said, if anything overthrow, our receivers are fast enough to run under and catch the ball. Wilson is getting better with every game, but I think we forget sometimes just how good Mallet really was.
